Hinges and channels: which fittings matter, and why?

By the Ekatan design teamReviewed 3 min read

The short answer

The hinges and drawer channels are the parts you use every day, so they wear first. Look for soft-close hinges that shut quietly without slamming, and full-extension channels that bring the whole drawer out. Ask which brand is inside: a good board with poor fittings still feels cheap.

Why the fittings matter

A wardrobe door is opened thousands of times a year. The board it is made from will outlast all of that; the hinge takes every one of those openings. When a cabinet starts to feel tired, with a door that drops, a drawer that sticks or a shutter that slams, it is almost always a fitting, not the board.

This table is read from how we build each item, so it always matches the fittings named on your quote.

What soft-close means

A soft-close hinge has a small damper built in. Push the door, and in the last few centimetres the damper takes over and closes it slowly and quietly. It stops doors slamming, protects the edges of the door and the cabinet, and saves fingers. We fit the Hettich Onsys 4447i Soft Close Hinge on every hinged door.

Drawer channels, and full extension

A drawer runs on a pair of channels, also called runners or slides. A full-extension channel brings the whole drawer out of the cabinet, so you can see and reach the back of it; a cheaper one stops three-quarters of the way. The load rating matters too: kitchen drawers full of steel vessels are heavy. We use the Hettich Quadro V6 Silent System Runner, Full Extension, Soft Close.

Sliding wardrobe doors run on a track with rollers top and bottom. Ours use Ebco hardware. Sliding or hinged covers when to choose them.

What to ask for on a quote

  1. The brand and model of the hinges. “Soft-close hinges” alone could be anything.
  2. Whether drawer channels are full extension, and their brand.
  3. What sliding doors run on, if you have any.
  4. The warranty on fittings, which is separate from the warranty on the board. Our FAQ lists both.

From our designer

When someone wants to save money, fittings are the last place I would cut. A cheaper finish still looks good years later; a cheap hinge is noticed every single day.

Common questions

  • Are soft-close hinges worth it?

Yes. They stop doors slamming and protect the edges of the doors and cabinets. We fit them on every hinged door.

  • Can a hinge be adjusted if a door drops?

Yes. Good hinges adjust in three directions with a screwdriver, so a door can be lined up again in a minute.

  • Do fittings have their own warranty?

Yes. Hardware and fittings are covered separately from the cabinet body. Our FAQ has the details.
